Applications and Experiments for Copper Sulphate Crystals
The crystals serve several standard practicals. They turn white when heated as their water of crystallisation is driven off, grow back from a saturated solution, and give a blue solution in which iron or zinc displaces copper. The same solution supplies copper ions for analysis and electrochemistry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do copper sulphate crystals turn white when heated?
Heating drives off the water of crystallisation, leaving white anhydrous copper sulphate. Adding water back restores the blue colour, which is why the crystals are used to teach hydrated salts.
Is blue copper sulphate the same as anhydrous copper sulphate?
No. The blue crystals are normally the pentahydrate, CuSO4·5H2O, while the anhydrous salt is CuSO4. They differ in appearance and formula weight, so check which one a method calls for.
