Newton's Disc (SKU SCL-PL-12304) is a disc bearing the colours of the spectrum that, when spun fast, appears nearly white to the eye. Physics teachers use it to show that white light is a mixture of colours, in school optics lessons and early college demonstrations. Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Newton's Disc look white when it spins?
The eye cannot follow the separate colour sectors at high speed, so their images overlap and blend. Because the sectors carry the spectrum colours, the blend approaches white, showing that white light is made of those colours.
Is the disc removable?
Yes. The 150 mm PVC disc is removable from the stand, which makes it easier to store or replace without changing the motor or the stand.
