Pipe Surge and Water Hammer Apparatus
Product Code : LSK-HAP-10578
Pipe Surge and Water Hammer Apparatus (SKU LSK-HAP-10578) is a self-contained, closed-circuit rig with two test sections: one shows mass oscillation in a surge shaft, the other the sharp pressure rise of water hammer when a valve closes. Hydraulics and fluid mechanics labs in civil and mechanical engineering colleges and polytechnics use it. Built at the Science Lab Supplies factory in Saha, Ambala, India (Plot 448, HSIIDC Industrial Area), it is sold straight from the manufacturer to colleges, contractors and distributors.
Specifications
Water flows from a constant head tank through a stainless steel test pipe of about 20 mm bore and 3 m length into a measuring tank, returning to the sump by centrifugal pump. A clear acrylic surge shaft, 4–20 mA sensors and computer data logging record each transient.

Applications and Experiments for the Water Hammer Apparatus
Students close the gate valve and watch transient behaviour develop: a pressure spike in the water hammer section and a rising, oscillating level in the surge shaft. Logged data links these runs to pipeline and penstock topics in B.Tech and diploma hydraulics.
- Demonstrating the surge phenomenon in a pipe.
- Studying the oscillatory characteristics of a surge shaft.
- Recording water hammer pressure after valve closure with the 0–7 bar sensor.
Standard Scope of Supply
The rig comes with both test sections, head, measuring and sump tanks, the circulating pump, valves, pressure, level and flow sensors, the interfacing unit with data-logging software, a control panel with on/off switch and mains indicator, and an English manual. The computer, water supply and floor drain are provided by the user.
Packing, MOQ and Lead Time
Whether you need one rig for a hydraulics lab or several for a new campus, the quotation states packing, delivery time and price for that number. Other apparatus from the range can be added.
As a registered exporter with an Importer-Exporter Code, Science Lab Supplies can ship to buyers in Malaysia, Peru, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria and Kenya. For technical questions use the contact page; build a multi-item request in the enquiry cart; tender buyers can start at the lab tender page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between pipe surge and water hammer?
Water hammer is the rapid pressure wave that follows sudden valve closure; pipe surge is the slower mass oscillation of water in a surge shaft. This rig has a separate test section for each.
Is a computer supplied with the apparatus?
No. The interface and software are included, but a computer (P-IV class with Windows 7, MS Office and a free USB port) is listed as a user-provided utility.
Is Science Lab Supplies the manufacturer or a trader?
The manufacturer: this apparatus is fabricated at the company's own plant in Saha, Ambala, India, and quotations are issued directly by that factory.
Related Pipe Flow and Transient Equipment
Transient flow is taught after steady pipe flow, so the rig pairs naturally with friction, network and bench equipment. These four items from the same range complete that sequence and can share one quotation.
- Fluid Friction Measurement — steady-flow losses in pipes and fittings.
- Pipe Network Apparatus — flow distribution in pipe arrays.
- Hydraulics Bench — base unit for bench-top fluid mechanics accessories.
- Computer Interfaced Fluid Machines — computer logging for fluid machinery.
