Viscosity and Particle Drag
Product Code : LSK-FM-10459
Viscosity and Particle Drag apparatus (SKU LSK-FM-10459) is a simple falling-sphere viscometer: students time a sphere falling a set distance through a test fluid to find viscosity and study the drag on particles. Two glass tubes allow side-by-side comparison of fluids in engineering and applied science labs. Science Lab Supplies manufactures the viscometer in Ambala, India, at its Plot 448 factory in the HSIIDC Industrial Area, Saha, and delivers it direct to colleges, polytechnics, tender contractors and distributors.
Specifications
A self-standing unit holds two glass tubes filled with test fluids, with a low-voltage backlight on the back plate so the spheres stay visible. At the tube bottom a valve drops the sphere into a collection vial, limiting fluid loss and helping when the tubes are drained. Wetted parts are glass and PTFE.

Applications and Experiments for the Viscosity and Particle Drag Apparatus
The apparatus is used to measure the terminal velocity of spheres in liquids and so calculate viscosity using Stokes' law, and to see how particle size, density and shape affect drag. Suitable fluids include water, thin machine oil, castor oil and motor oil, making it a versatile fluid mechanics lab experiment.
- B.E./B.Tech mechanical and chemical: coefficient of viscosity by the falling-sphere method.
- Comparing two fluids at once in the twin tubes.
- Drag on non-spherical shapes made by students, up to 8 mm.
- B.Sc. physics and diploma practicals: Stokes' law and terminal velocity.
Standard Scope of Supply
The unit comes with its two glass tubes, backlit back plate, base valve with collection vial, and a stopwatch. The laboratory chooses and fills the test fluids; the quotation confirms the test spheres supplied. Use only fluids that can be handled safely and are compatible with glass and PTFE.
Packing, MOQ and Lead Time
Order one viscometer for a demonstration or several for parallel groups; each quotation gives packing, delivery time and price for that number. Other engineering lab equipment in India from our fluid mechanics section can be combined on the same quotation.
Having an Importer-Exporter Code as a registered exporter, Science Lab Supplies can ship to buyers in the Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, Zambia, Rwanda and South Africa. Send the quantity through the contact page or enquiry cart; if the order is part of a tender, see the lab tender page first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which fluids can be tested?
Water, thin machine oil, castor oil and motor oil are suitable, and so is any fluid that can be handled safely and is chemically compatible with the glass and PTFE wetted parts.
How are the spheres recovered?
When a sphere reaches the bottom, students turn the valve and it drops into a collection vial. The valve keeps fluid loss low, so the tubes need refilling less often.
Is Science Lab Supplies the manufacturer or a trader?
It is made, not traded. Science Lab Supplies manufactures the unit at its factory in Saha, Ambala, India, and handles your enquiry from there without a middleman.
Can students test their own shapes?
Yes, provided each shape fits through the base valve, which allows a maximum of 8 mm in any single dimension.
